Before Cara Delevingne trotted out this time-reversing hair trick,
she took a throwback trend out for a spin: the hair wispie, or when you
deliberately pull out pieces to frame your face. (A Lizzie McGuire
signature.) Below, tips on how to style them for the 21st century.
If you've already got shorter layers
Congrats!
You and Zosia Mamet are already halfway there. Unlike the method Sporty
Spice and company would employ, the more modern, less contrived way to
do this is to just let the hair wispies fall where they may.

If your hair is more or less the same length all around
Opt
for a wispier wispie like Ciara, as if the wind tugged them loose. When
the wispie is long *and* chunky, it just looks weird.

But if you do want to go chunkier like Hailey Baldwin
Tip: Chin-length is about as long as you can pull off without aforementioned weirdness.

And if you *do* want to try a longer wispie à la Cara Delevingne
But then again, if almost literally referencing '90s girl bands is your bag, go for it...just keep the rest high and tight.

And the #1 Hair Wispie Commandment?
Make
sure to grab hair mostly from the top, near the part, for the most
flattering effect. Too much from the sides = my ponytail's coming
undone.
