Hi Damsels!
Funny enough, the Ankara fabric story could be compared to that of Cinderella. Yes! The Ankara fabric was once neglected, but is now in the heart of every African. It’s actually a very good news.
A dilemma that seems to plague most ladies, especially those in Europe and America, and why they avoid buying African fabrics is because they never seem to come with instructions! How frustrating is that? What do you do with them. Where is the back, where is the front? Should they be dry cleaned or machine washed? etc
An online search generally comes up with scarce information on just the basics of Ankara fabric. Well, I’m tired of the lack of the information. Honestly! This is going to be an ongoing series on how to choose your Ankara fabric. Ankara is the current trend, especially in Africa, so it is only appropriate we begin with how to tell the good from the bad fabric.
Therefore, bear in mind, the following top qualities you should look out for in purchasing your Ankara fabric;
1. 100% FINE COTTON:
For the most part, the Ankara fabric is made out of 100% very fine cotton. However, the trend these days is to print Ankara patterns or designs on silk, satin, jersey and all kinds of fabrics. For our purposes, we are going with cotton since it is still the most commonly used.
2. PLAIN WEAVE TYPE:
The Ankara fabric weave type is a plain one. Implicit in this is that it is tightly woven, such that it can last long.
3. ABRASIONS RESISTANCE:
Also, this fabric is able to resist abrasions caused by its wicked step sisters.
4. GOOD STRENGTH:
This beautiful fabric has one striking quality; good strength. This is shown when put into water
5. SOFT HAND:
Funny enough, this fabric has a soft hand. This means that it is very smooth to the touch.
6. HYDROPHILLIC:
Ankara is like fish in water, very hydrophillic. Just because it’s made out of cotton, it absorbs moisture quickly and dries just as fast. Its ability to dry quickly gives it a cooling effect and makes it perfect for the hot sun in Africa and summer time in the USA and Europe.
With these qualities, you can be well assured that you’ve purchased a good Ankara fabric!
